How to store coffee beans after opening

A good storage routine starts when you open the pack. Before choosing a container, read the manufacturer's instructions: they are the reference for that product. Then organise consumption to avoid having several packs open at once.

Choose a suitable location

Lavazza recommends storing beans in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct light. In practice, look for a cupboard away from the oven, steam and sunny windows. Close the pack or container as soon as you have taken out the coffee.

Do not leave coffee open beside the machine simply for convenience. The most accessible place is not always the best place for your reserve pack.

Keep the product details

  • Write down the opening date.
  • Keep the product name, batch identification and stated best-before date.
  • If you transfer the coffee, use a clean, dry, food-safe container.
  • Avoid mixing the remains of an older pack with a new one.

These steps help you identify what you are using and recognise whether a change in the cup coincides with different coffee or storage conditions.

Fill the hopper according to use

If your machine has a bean hopper, follow its manual and add an amount suited to expected consumption. Do not treat the hopper as long-term storage. Before cleaning it, check the manufacturer's procedure; do not introduce water or cleaning products where the manual does not allow them.

How long does coffee last once opened?

There is no single period of best flavour that applies to every coffee and storage condition. Follow the printed date and any instructions for use after opening. Loss of aroma is a different issue from food safety: a taste test does not replace the manufacturer's guidance.

If you take a long time to finish a pack, consider a smaller size rather than accumulating stock. For your next purchase, compare coffee bean pack sizes with your usual consumption.

Storage and planning your next pack

Calculate how many coffees 1 kg makes at your actual dose before increasing stock. If cup flavour changes, investigate storage separately from machine cleaning and descaling: changing coffee does not replace the manufacturer's maintenance routine.
