Nespresso-compatible capsules: check your system before buying

Have you found a coffee you would like to try, but the packaging only says “Nespresso-compatible”? Before ordering, check which range your machine belongs to. Original and Vertuo are different systems, and their capsules are not interchangeable.

The machine brand is not enough

The Nespresso name appears on machines from different ranges. Find the model name on the machine or in its manual, then compare it with the compatibility stated by the coffee manufacturer. A photograph of the capsule can help identify its shape, but does not replace this check.

Machine systemWhat to look for on the coffee packagingMistake to avoid
OriginalExplicit Original compatibility and any exceptions specified by the manufacturer.Buying a Vertuo capsule.
VertuoCapsules for the Vertuo system that are compatible with your model.Assuming that an Original capsule will also fit.
Professional or another systemA specific reference to the system and model you use.Assuming that all office machines use Original.

Three steps to check compatibility

  1. Read the machine model. Do not use the brand alone as your buying criterion.
  2. Read the capsule description. Look for the system name and any stated restrictions.
  3. Resolve any uncertainty before opening the pack. Send the seller both references: the machine and the coffee.

After compatibility, compare flavour and cost

Consider whether you prefer a stronger or milder coffee, and whether you usually drink it black or with milk. Use the tasting notes to choose an initial option, without treating the flavour description as a guarantee that everyone will enjoy it in the same way.

To compare prices, divide the pack price by its number of capsules. Do not directly compare the prices of two boxes containing different quantities. If you use two capsules per drink, include both in your consumption calculation.

“Compostable” and “recyclable” labels also deserve careful reading: follow the manufacturer's instructions and check the collection options available in your area. Compatibility alone tells you nothing about how to dispose of the packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Do Original capsules work in a Vertuo machine?

No. Nespresso confirms that the two systems use different capsules.

Will a compatible capsule work in any office machine?

You cannot assume this. Where a machine is used does not determine its system. Check the model and the stated compatibility.

What should I send if I do not know which system I have?

A photograph of the model label and the full name of the capsule you want to buy are a good starting point.

Browse the Nespresso Original-compatible capsules in the Aroma Port catalogue and read the details of each option before ordering.

What about Lavazza, Nicola, Delta Q or Dolce Gusto capsules?

Separate the coffee brand from the system stated on the packaging. Lavazza, for example, distinguishes A Modo Mio from its Original-compatible capsules. A familiar name on a box is not enough. To compare formats, read our guides to Lavazza capsules, Delta Q, and Dolce Gusto and NEO. Original compatibility should not be treated as covering these other systems.
